We want to thank everyone in the community that has come through for EARS this past week. We reached for help and it has been coming in. We are hanging on by a thread but the enormous hearts and dedication of the EARS Board and its volunteers are determined to continue saving precious lives. We can all make a difference if we work together.

EARS benefits from generous business owners and their customers

Englewood Animal Rescue Sanctuary accepted a VERY generous donation of over a thousand pounds of pet food from the Black Widow Harley-Davidson dealership in Port Charlotte. Irene and Armand Pinard, owners of the dealership, purchased several hundred pounds of pet food and then asked the same from their customers. The Pinards read in the newspaper that the EARS food bank was critically low and took action. They now have a program in place in which they will collect pet food for EARS on the last Saturday of every month.

"These folks really came through for us," said Bobbi Austin, spokesperson and board member for EARS. "Business owners like Irene and Armand Pinard and the great people of the community have shown us that they truly care about the animals that we rescue!"

"Our food bank is so important to needy families and their pets,” said Deva Ballantyne, board member for EARS. "We distribute hundreds of pounds of pet food every week. Just a few short weeks ago, our food bank was nearly empty. We made a plea to the community and they came through! We will always be fighting the good fight to keep levels in the food bank manageable, but this reinforces the fact that we live in a caring, giving community."

EARS continues to be in need of cat food, not only for the food bank, but for the many cats that are being cared for by EARS. Friskies Paté and Fancy Feast are particularly needed and appreciated.

If members of the community would like to help, but find it inconvenient to drop off food, EARS continues to desperately need cash donations.

EARS is a volunteer-based animal rescue and sanctuary.  It breaks our hearts to have to turn anyway any dog or cat.  Our mission is to rescue everyone that we can but funds are at an all-time low.  We are fighting to survive, barely able to pay the bills.
We are a true No-Kill, No-Cage shelter.  Because we are a small organization we don't receive the federal funding that large organization do.  We DO NOT believe in killing a precious dog or cat to make room for another one.  We just can't do that.  We believe every life is precious and deserves a loving home.
Every dollar that comes in to EARS goes to help the cats and dogs we have rescued and keep them safe, healthy and loved until we are able to find their "forever homes"

An EARful from E.A.R.S

I started at EARS as a Cat Socializer. I am now Volunteer Coordinator, Cat Room Tour Guide, Re-Sale Store Cashier and Buddy of Rascal, our American Bulldog mascot.

We are a very small organization but we have a Big Heart with stories to warm your Heart.

Rascal is the soul of EARS. He was neglected for 2 years, lying in urine because of a bladder infection. His paw pads were bloody and his 40pound underweight body was a mass of sores. He is 8 years old and our official greeter and love bug. He's had many medical procedures at great cost and we still owe vet bills on him but he is worth every penny. His is ony one story but he has affected so many with his sweetness, gentleness and good humor.

On the Cat Front, we have wonderful news. Whitney, our oldest and longest resident, was adopted recently. She is 7 years old and was with us for more than 3 years. There was not a dry eye in the house when she left to go to her “forever home”. She is so happy there and has adjusted so well. She knows she is loved and acts like a kitten again. Being at EARS for so long she became withdrawn but now she has a new life and enjoys every second of it.

Also, an 11 year old cat was adopted by an older couple who have been in several times to say how happy they are with their new companion.

A 19 year old blind and dead cat was taken in by a wonderful, compassionate woman who pampers older, unwanted cats for the rest of their lives. We are blessed to have such beautiful people like her in the world.

We hope to continue to report stories like these but we are in dire straits as so many are these days. We need help with rent money, it is over $1000 every month.

Can't give cash? We'll take food for our Pet Pantry, litter, paper towels, cleaning supplies like bleach, and donations for Rascal's Re-Sale Store. Anything to keep us going so we can rescue more of these precious beings.

Come visit our store and meet Rascal and our wonderful cats. I'll give you a personal tour and introduce you to everyone of them.

EARS in critical need of donations

EARS funding has reached an all-time low. The economic state in Englewood and the surrounding area has had a dramatic effect on the shelter. EARS operates on a budget of about $10,000 a month and is currently $4,500 short of that goal. EARS is reaching out to the community for donations.

“The summer months have been a real struggle", said Bobbi Austin, spokesperson for EARS. “With the extremely hot weather, people are not frequenting events like in the past and donations have been low during these summer months. Our only choice is to reach out to our community and ask for help".

“We have cut our operating costs to the bare bones”, said Susan Reilly, board member for EARS. "There is just nothing left for us to cut. Our volunteers work hard and do all they can. We are truly grateful to the loyal people who have continued to support us, but we need more of the community to generously offer their help. If everyone just donated a few dollars, I’m sure we could make our budget for August".

EARS has received an unusual amount of calls for help since spring. EARS has seen a marked increase in abandoned and stray animals and wants to help the community as much as possible. EARS receives no grants and relies totally on donations and fund-raisers. The people at EARS have been working tirelessly arranging events and yard sales to supplement donations.
